The Lindy Hop is an American dance that evolved in Harlem, New York City in the 1920s and 1930s evolving with the jazz music of that time. Lindy was a fusion of many dances that preceded it or were popular during its development but is mainly based on jazz, tap, breakaway and the Charleston. Frankie Manning (above) was the first Lindy Hop dancer to add lifts and flips (better known as aerials) to the Lindy Hop, and many of the dance sequences in black and white films of the time featuring Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers were choreographed by him.

Over the years, aerials became a main attraction in Lindy competitions and exhibitions, however, interestingly enough, aerials were not permitted at most clubs and ballrooms during any social type dance while on the dance floor except during exhibitions or contests as too many dancers and people around these dancers were getting hurt.
